Basic-rate taxpayers could face tax penalty if they don't act before deadline next week



THOUSANDS of families are being reminded by HM Revenue and Customs that they only have a few days left to register for self-assessment in order to avoid a Child Benefit tax bill. Families where one parent is earning over the threshold, including some basic-rate taxpayers, need to register for self-assessment before October 5 or they could face a hefty fine.
