Shell Oil protestors dangling from bridge must pay $2,500 per hour

A federal judge in Alaska has ordered that Greenpeace USA pay a $2,500 fine for every hour it continues to block a Shell Arctic oil-drilling vessel from leaving the harbor in Portland, Oregon.

U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason ruled Thursday in Anchorage that Greenpeace USA is in civil contempt because of protesters dangling off a bridge in Portland, whom she said impeded the Shell vessel.

Thirteen members of the Greenpeace USA — an environmental activist group — suspended themselves from the St. John's Bridge, starting at 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
