WHEN the statue of 18th century philanthropist and slave trader Edward Colston was thrown into Bristol harbour on June 7 2020, over 300 years after his involvement in the transportation of tens of thousands of black Africans into slavery, and almost exactly 300 years after his death, opinion across the country was inevitably polarised.
