MICROPLASTICS, #MeToo and veganism - that's how I'd sum up the past year - apart from the bubbling cauldron of Brexit, of course. And those three things demonstrate perfectly how quickly things have changed, and perhaps show that we are gradually, slowly, becoming a more caring society.

Doubling plastic bag charge misses the real problem, says ROSS CLARK
IT IS hard to like plastic but does anyone really believe that the two Government initiatives announced yesterday - doubling the charge on single-use plastic bags to 10p and ordering headteachers to rid their schools of single-use plastics by 2022 - will do anything more than scratch the surface of the global pollution problem?

Raise a glass to the UK economy this Boxing Day, says TIM NEWARK
DOOM and gloom merchants have been running riot over the past few months, talking down the UK as we look forward to Brexit next year. I must be living in a different country since everything I see and hear points in a different direction: upwards. Economically we've had a great year. Growth is up, unemployment down, wages are up but inflation is under control. What's not to like?
