TWO hundred years ago there took place at St Peter's Field, in Manchester one of the most brutal acts of repression ever carried out by the British state on home soil. A vast assembly had gathered to protest about their lack of a political voice, principally due to draconian restrictions on suffrage that left the common people unable to vote.
