When Julius Caesar anchored his fleet off the South Coastal what is now Deal in 55BC, Britain was a land of dirty and smelly Iron Age primitives who worshipped Celtic pagan gods. By the time the Romans left in 410Ad, there was a town called Londinium where people spoke latin, wore togas, watched chariot races – and took baths.
