THE YEAR was 510AD and the Roman Emperor Honorius had just sent a note to the leaders of Britannic tribes informing them of his intentions to remove Roman troops from their island. Trouble was brewing in mainland Europe, he explained, what with Goths and Visigoths and Sahons and Gauls and Germanic tribes all getting stroppy, and quite apart from the cost of keeping the Roman forces in Britain, they were needed to protect the Roman Empire back home.
