James Osterberg, Jr. was born in 1947 and grew up in a trailer park in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
He played drums in a few different bands while attending high school in Ann Arbor, including one called The Iguanas, which inspired his later stage name, Iggy.
He attended the University of Michigan but quickly dropped out to study blues drumming in Chicago. He returned to Ann Arbor a few months later and joined the Prime Movers, a blues band which played all over the Midwest.
