Blocked highways, a closed airport, and shuttered tourist attractions just scratch the surface of the measures Beijing is taking to make sure its new national holiday goes off without a hitch. Declared in May, the new September 3 celebration is set to mark the 70th anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War II.
The main event will be a military parade on the day that would make North Korea blush. The city underwent a full-scale rehearsal last week.
