Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been accused of requesting to join airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria, despite advising the public it was at the insistence of the U.S. government
Fairfax Media reported Abbott pushed Washington to allow Australia to expand its targets from Iraq into Syria in the fight against ISIS.
Despite the Australian government advising it received a formal request from President Barack Obama on Friday, the publication quoted senior government officials as stating the request in fact came out of Abbott's office in Canberra.
